Summary/Abstract: EU policies have historically had an impact on growth rates in member states as well as on the dynamics of faster growth in less developed member states compared to the EU average, which encouraged the process of economic convergence between national economies. This trend, however, was stopped or slowed down during and after the great economic crisis of 2008. Positive or negative economic trends at the EU level were always in direct correlation with the degree of "Euro-enthusiasm", i.e. "Euroscepticism" in the Union, whereby the intensity and effect of those tendencies depended on national specificities, as was shown in the case of "Brexit". The future of the Union, i.e. the ability to overcome Euroscepticism, will depend on the ability to restore more balanced economic relations and greater solidarity.
