Summary/Abstract: The European Commission (EC) is an executive institution of the European Union (EU), which is formed after the elections to the European Parliament (EP) and has a five-year mandate to: establish goals and priorities for action within the EU and its 28 member states; proposes legislation to the Council of the EU and the EP; implements policies and coordinates the EU budget; represents the EU in international relations. The EC is headed by the president, and the members of the EC are commissioners and vice-presidents nominated by member countries, one representative per country. All candidacies are approved by the EP. The EC has a total of 28 members, 27 members and the president, with general directorates divided by area.
