Summary/Abstract: Accessibility is one of the fundamental principles of the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, representing a precondition for enabling these persons to fully enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms. Thus, in order to enable persons with disabilities to participate fully in all aspects of life, the Convention document provides for the implementation of appropriate measures to ensure equal access for these persons to the physical environment, to transportation, information and means of communication, both in urban and rural areas. These measures, which include the identification and removal of obstacles and barriers to full access, should be applied, inter alia, to (i) buildings, roads, means of transportation and other indoor and outdoor facilities, including schools, housing, health facilities and workplaces; (ii) information, communication and other services, including electronic and emergency services.
