Summary/Abstract: State-owned enterprises are an integral part of the economy of the Republic of Moldova. They continue to play an important role in the national economy as significant owners, operators and employees in several strategic sectors. The assets of state-owned enterprises constitute over ¼ of GDP (26.5%) and approximately 12% of the assets of the corporate sector. State-owned enterprises employ 6.2% of the workforce in entrepreneurship, and the top ten enterprises with a state presence generate 82% of the total sales of state-owned enterprises and are involved in important national activities and infrastructure, such as gas import and distribution, electricity networks, telecommunications, railways, transport, road infrastructure and the food industry. In addition, many state-owned enterprises provide important public services.
