Summary/Abstract: Corruption in the process of regulating and controlling the activity in the SME sector creates uncertainty and makes this area less attractive for initiating and developing businesses. The study was developed to highlight the main shortcomings that potentially open the way to corruption in the SME sector. It helps journalists and civic leaders to better understand which areas are vulnerable to corruption, how they can be investigated, what are the data sources and how they can be interpreted. The results of the study help journalists interested in the subject of corruption to more easily identify areas sensitive to corruption related to the regulation of the business environment, in order to carry out journalistic investigations, and, thus, to contribute to reducing the phenomenon of corruption and raising public awareness.
