Summary/Abstract: Viewed through the eyes of history, the police in Yugoslavia - and later, Serbia - was always more of an apparatus of force, responsible for the preservation of a specific socio-political order, than a structure concerned with establishing and maintaining the rule of law. After the events that took place on 5 October 2000, despite its seeming resistance to change, it has been in a more or less constant process of reform. However, research shows that, despite these reforms, the main characteristic of the police in Serbia is still its dependence on politics, which has been preserved even in the most critical moments that followed the democratic changes.
