Summary/Abstract: Anti-establishment extremism (AEE) is increasingly attracting the attention of both the public and experts in terrorism and extremism. Its popularity surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as other crises to which authorities failed to provide satisfactory responses - such as the 2008 economic crisis, the 2015 migrant crisis, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. These events contributed to an erosion of trust in democracy and its institutions, and consequently to the growth of various extremist ideas and movements.
