Summary/Abstract: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role for the innovation, economic growth and competitiveness of the European Union. SMEs are 99% of businesses and employ more than 2/3 of the workforce in Europe. In order for SMEs to be actively involved in supporting innovative processes and contributing to EU economic growth, they need information and funding. Namely, the most pressing problems for small and medium-sized enterprises are access to finance. Specifically, traditional and alternative sources of MS funding are analyzed, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. Based on the data collected and after analyzing the trends and problems on the topic, conclusions and recommendations are made regarding the models of financing of small and medium-sized enterprises.
