Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to analyse the role geographic codes play in the literary criticism by Bronisław Chlebowski. The author observes how, analysing Polish literature of the 19th c., he defined its particularities in a way similar to contemporary definitions of the Central-European region and its particularities. His opinions are situated in the broad context of anthropological geography, developed at the time by Wacław Nałkowski and Eugeniusz Romer.
