Summary/Abstract: The article shows the activity of the Main School alumni in the field of preparation and publication of an encyclopedia. After the closing of the only university in the Russian partition they tried to continue in this way academic imperatives of expanding and verification of knowledge. In this difficult epoch of Polish culture they created the intellectual foundation for Polish society and they built standards for Polish science. In the era of national slavery authors of encyclopedia were working for the idea of “invisible university”.
