Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the transnational families phenomenon, building on empirical material gathered by William Thomas and Florian Znaniecki for their classic monograph Polish Peasant in Europe and America. Although the authors declare freeing sociology from moral judgments, their own analysis of the family changes seems to be normatively biased. Migration appears to be “a social evil”, weakening the resources of the nation, leading to the “demoralization”, “lowering the moral level” and “degeneration” of the family. On the other hand, Polish Peasant… is a unique set of historical data analyzed in contemporary migration literature: migrational motivations, the myth of the receiving country, managing the household from a distance, transnational parenting, changes of care and relationship patterns.
