Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyse particularities of the autobiographical discourse in the first part of Medical Discourses (Discursos medicinales) by Juan Méndez Nieto. It presents the circumstances in which this unusual treatise was created, and comments on the peculiarity of its structure in terms of a possible influence of the picaresque genre, the fundamental model of autobiography in Spanish literature in the 17th century. It also focuses on the importance of the concept of a journey for the structure and interpretation of the text.
