Summary/Abstract: This paper deals at first with the concept of the archive, mainly in its understanding by Moritz Baßler. Then, the author presents briefly as an example the private archive of the Hamburg’s literary couple Rosa Maria and David Assing. Their legacy is a part of the Collection Varnhagen located after the World War II in the Jagiellonian Library in Cracow. After a cursory description of this archive the author attempts to give a brief answer to the question in the title of this article. In particular, the cultural and historical importance of this and similar archives is being stressed.
