Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the history of Bongo Flava – a musical genre originating from Tanzania. In fact, many musical genres have influenced the creation of such anoriginal mix. Today, after dozen or so years Bongo Flava is a syncretic genre less similar to American hip-hop and more to R&B music mixed with local aromas. For several dozen years, the first stars of Bongo Flava music have shaped the world views of the young generation, currently trying themselves in creating music.Based on the research I conducted in Iringa (Tanzania), I present the problems the young musicians are currently struggling with, while living far away from the musical capital of the country. I also try to diagnose whether Bongo Flava, widely known today within Tanzania, is likely to succeed internationally.
