Summary/Abstract: Although novice translators face numerous difficulties when tackling specialisedtranslation, they are eager to take up any translation task, believing that a good dictionary oronline resources can help them translate any type of text and the only problem lies in findingan equivalent lexical item. Nevertheless, learning translation of specialised texts involves much more than just vocabulary enrichment. The paper presents an experiment carried out on a group of translation students with no previous experience in translation of specialised texts. As a part of their class activity, the students were given an assignment consisting in translation of a standard legal text with the use of online or paper dictionaries, but without the help of the teacher. The aim of this study was to analyse challenges faced by novice translators confronted with a specialised translation task and to make students aware of the problems they might encounter in their future work. The results of the research can be useful for designing a translation course, as they clearly demonstrated the areas that require particular attention and care on the part of the translator trainer.
