Summary/Abstract: A look at the intellectual environment of the period of Sultan Selim III as exemplified in Şeyh Galib’s seminal work reveals its Islamic context and a specific Ottoman Sufi tradition. Contrary to conventional historiography, the reforms of the late Ottoman period that started with the Nizam-i Cedid can be viewed within the framework of continuity of Ottoman socio-political thought and not only a mere product of the European influences at the time of imperial decline.
