Summary/Abstract: The article constitutes an interpretation of a concept developed by Ulf Hannerz which concerns the social networks functioning in the urban space and the modes of urban existence, which result from the emergence of those networks, constructed on the basis of the social roles played by the members of those groups. The concept of the modes of urban existence has been approached in the context of the use of public urban space as a site which enables people to play certain social roles and further develop the networks of social relationships. Based on that approach, the author emphasizes the significant role of urban public space in the integration mode of human existence, as well as its possible marginalization, if the inhabitants of the cities function in cloistered, segregated, or solitary modes of urban existence.
