Summary/Abstract: Dumitru Stăniloae first encountered Palamas at the beginning of his doctoral research. His pioneering study of Palamas was only published in 1938, however, in response to hostile Roman Catholic critiques of Palamism. In this study Stăniloae presents the Hesychast Controversy as an East/West dispute, a judgement he did not modify in the 1993 reissue of the work despite his deepening appreciation of Palamas in later life. The evolution of Stăniloae’s understanding of Palamas as a mystical theologian is best understood through his contacts with Nichifor Crainic, his experience of imprisonment, and most of all his augmented translation of the Romanian Philokalia.
