Summary/Abstract: The article aims to analyze the metaphors of nature along with its selected elements within the specific textual environment of a multimodal film text. The conceptualization of nature metaphors, further examined through the lens of Korean culture, requires a certain level of knowledge. Since conceptual metaphors (in light of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson’s approach, 1988) are inherently linked to culture and ways of experiencing it, an analysis grounded in such an approach necessitates extensive cultural and historical knowledge. Film, in turn, serves as a medium that combines various forms of encoding meaning, namely in vision and sound. The multimodal film text chosen as the research material is, in fact, an audiovisual adaptation of a text from the period of Japanese occupation of the Korean Peninsula (1910–1945). The text titled Sangnoksu (상록수, Evergreen Tree) was written by Sim Hun and was published serially in Tonga Ilbo (동아일보) between 1935 and 1936. After the Korean War (1950–1953), it was adapted for film twice, both in a monochrome version (directed by Sin Sang-ok, 신상옥, 1961) and a color version (directed by Im Kwŏn-T’aek, 임권택, 1978). The analysis was conducted on the monochrome version, which, according to the Author, highlights the conceptualization process of the metaphorization of nature and its selected elements.
