Summary/Abstract: The content discusses the critical state of water resources globally, highlighting the disparity between available resources and human needs. The research presented in the article employed a quantitative approach. In particular, the findings were derived from an examination of various articles and predominantly from online research concerning the abundant resources available from European Union websites, as well as the highly satisfactory bibliography, which is predominantly Greek in origin. In theory, nearly 1.2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water despite adequate water availability. While the European Water Framework Directive aims to manage water resources through comprehensive legislation, focusing on river basin management and public participation, in Greece, challenges include small hydrological units and significant seasonal variations, leading to over-exploitation and depletion of aquifers. Efficient management and adaptation strategies are vital in addressing water scarcity and climate change impacts.
