Summary/Abstract: The social economy offers concrete and innovative solutions to major challenges that states must address in the context of persistent and mutually reinforcing economic crises and growing risks to people’s lives and well-being. In Bulgaria, the social economy has also experienced rapid development in recent years, with European measures to encourage and support the creation of new alternative business models and civil society projects acting as a key driving force. The aim of this article is to provide a brief overview of policies in the EU and in Bulgaria and to outline some of the main challenges and opportunities for the development of the sector in the country.
