Summary/Abstract: In this study, we have attempted to provide a brief history on how the contemporary art collections of the Brukenthal National Museum had developed, from their foundation during the time of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal until the 1940s. Emphasis was placed on policies of contemporary art acquisitions from each historical period and on the management of the art exhibition itself, which gave the collections of the Brukenthal National Museum a certain specificity. Aspects related to the history of ideas, tastes, and influence of politics on art and culture were also taken into account.
