Summary/Abstract: My presentation aims to provide a theoretical approach to the relationship between twentieth-century Hungarian poetry and the sacred, offering a brief analysis of various concepts of transcendence, with particular emphasis on the connection between literature and the transcendent. It seeks to answer the question of how the so-called ‘God-seeking’ poem, in the period before World War II, brought changes to Hungarian poetry compared to the poetic endeavours from the Enlightenment to the early twentieth century. Drawing on Tamás Molnár’s concepts of the comprehensor (the initiate) and the viator (the pilgrim), my analysis explores parallels between modern philosophy and art in their attempts to interpret the relationship between God and humanity, establishing the position of the confessor (the testifier) as a distinctive creative orientation applicable to the first half of twentieth-century Hungarian poetry.
