Summary/Abstract: Building renovation in the context of sustainable development is one of the phenomena that brings numerous challenges to specialists in various fields of activity, to authorities, but also to society. The excessive obsolescence of the built stock in Romania, at present, requires interventions both on functionality and structural safety, as well as on energy performance in order to comply with the principles of sustainable development and integration into the European Union programs regarding the reduction of carbon emissions until their cancellation by 2050. Building renovation always involves a complex and integrated approach, gathering around it specialists in architecture, structure, installations, energy audit, but also in the execution of works. Among the buildings, a separate category is represented by those that are exponents of the architectural heritage which consists of both historical monuments and buildings with architectural or environmental value and buildings located within the protection range of historical monuments or in protected built areas. Interventions on them must take into account the principles formulated and adopted over time through charters for the restoration or safeguarding of historic cities, as well as new technologies or behavioral changes in society. In this sense, research is very rigorous and is carried out both in the theoretical field, through preliminary studies - architectural historical study, facade study, specific studies of all artistic components or materials present - stone, glass, metal, wood, which form the basis of architectural, structural and installation design proposals, as well as in the field of materials and techniques for their implementation to ensure compatibility with existing classical materials. A constant challenge of our days is the conclusions of the energy audit report and the interior decoration of these spaces loaded with cultural significance or simply because they are made of traditional materials that require the adoption of open attitudes or perhaps only compromise on the part of energy auditors and beneficiaries or investors who must resort to choosing as much as possible natural materials and colors that are expensive so that the results obtained following restoration or renovation are of quality and lasting. European funds are favorable to us in this regard, but it depends on us, all of us, how we use them to save our existing building stock.
