Summary/Abstract: This paper explores the relationships between major contemporary urban development paradigms, with a focus on Smart Growth and its connections to New Urbanism, Compact City, and Smart City concepts. Drawing on a comparative literature review, the study identifies a set of shared principles across these concepts - among them sustainable land use, the containment of urban sprawl, stronger public transportation, and environmental protection. Smart Growth emerges as a comprehensive framework that brings together economic, social, and ecological objectives, placing it in close alignment with the broader agenda of sustainable development. The paper concludes that these paradigms are not competing visions, but complementary ones, with real collective potential to shape more sustainable cities.
