Summary/Abstract: The paper presents preliminary results from a survey on students’ views regarding the tourist utilization of Ottoman and communist heritage in Bulgaria. These two types of heritage are classified as "problematic" because they are perceived ambivalently within society and generate tensions and conflicts arising from existing disputes over their meaning and value. The survey was conducted between December 2020 and April 2025 using two separate online questionnaires, completed by a total of 549 respondents – Bulgarian students enrolled in various academic fields, mostly at universities in Bulgaria but also abroad. The paper offers a comparative analysis of how students perceive Ottoman and communist heritage in general, what their personal associations with it are, and the extent to which its use for tourism purposes is supported.
