The Contribution of Small Farmers to Ensuring Food Security in Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: Small farms occupy a leading place in structure of Bulgarian agriculture. This study examines contribution of small farms to national agriculture, based on data from Eurostat. The relative share of small farms in terms of used agricultural area, produced output, specialisation, as well as the distribution of small farms by subgroups, was analysed. This study aims to determine the relative contribution of food produced by small farms to ensuring food security in Bulgaria. A key aspect of this study was to research the role of small farms in ensuring food security, sustainable resource management. The article outlines the challenges facing small farms, such as access to finance and markets, as well as the opportunities for development through policy synergy.
