Summary/Abstract: Rural regions in Bulgaria play a strategic role for society, the economy and the environment. This article examines their evolution across three policy periods – the Rural Development Programme (RDP) 2007–2013, RDP 2014–2020 and the Strategic Plan under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2023–2027. It analyses trends in unemployment, gross domestic product, demography and business dynamics across predominantly urban, intermediate and predominantly rural areas, drawing on Eurostat data and policy documents. The article evaluates the effectiveness of measures and outlines scenarios for the future. The main conclusion is that rural development remains challenging, but targeted investments, integrated policies and stronger urban–rural linkages can foster sustainable growth.
