Summary/Abstract: The publication is dedicated to the social embeddedness of terrorism. An understanding of the phenomenon is presented that emphasizes its social dimensions. The multifaceted nature of terrorism allows it to be viewed through different research prisms. This publication examines relevant sociological theories for explaining terrorism. Key paradigms in the field of sociology – functionalist, conflict and symbolic interactionism – are discussed from the perspective of their cognitive capabilities in relation to the research and interpretations of terrorism. Some social and economic consequences of terrorism are discussed. The conclusion reached is that due to the social embeddedness of terrorism, sociology as a scientific discipline has an important place in the interdisciplinary ensemble in its study.
