Summary/Abstract: The publication focuses on the etymology and nature of corruption. The threats and negative effects of corruption are presented, which require effective measures to counteract it. The etymology of the word corruption is examined. The nature of corruption is analyzed. For this purpose, scientific publications and documents from international organizations, including directives and other legal documents, were used. The conclusion is that preventing corruption and successfully combating it are of fundamental importance for protecting the values of the European Union and the rights of its citizens, as well as for maintaining the rule of law and trust in public institutions.
