Summary/Abstract: The ethnical and confessional diversity of the Arad area has created the desire of eachcommunity to preserve their own identity. One of the identity marks was the school. LawXXXVIII of 1868 gave the right of confessions to set up and support school institutions. During the Austro-Hungarian dualism, the Greek-Catholic ecclesiastical authorities in the county of Arad assumed the role of coordinating their own network of educational units, the evolution of which was fluctuating. If 13 schools were reviewed in the school year 1891/1892, their number diminished to 8, around World War I. The educational process took place according to the legislation in force and the norms developed by the Greek-Catholic Episcopate, all of which were meant to ensure its proper functioning.
