Summary/Abstract: In 21st-century Romanian society, the figure of Venerable Gherontie, known as a “fool for Christ”, gained increasing appreciation, despite having been little understood and often rejected by those around him during his lifetime. From adolescence, he distinguished himself through a life of prayer and fasting, and during his imprisonment under the communist regime, he is said to have received from the Mother of God the calling of “foolishness for Christ”. This radical spiritual path made him difficult to comprehend for many. Yet the miracles attributed to him, even during his lifetime, led many to regard him as the first contemporary saint of this kind.
