Summary/Abstract: Illness is not merely an individual medical experience, but a complex social phenomenon that generates multiple forms of social suffering, such as the loss of autonomy, stigmatization, social exclusion and the vulnerability of the entire family system. In this context, social work plays a crucial role in identifying, preventing, and mitigating the effects of social suffering through integrated and personalized psychosocial support services.Psychosocial and spiritual support offered to patients and their families complements medical intervention, addressing the emotional, relational and spiritual dimensions of suffering. Accordingly, this article analyzes, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the theoretical implications of social suffering and the practical challenges of family caregiving, with a focus on caregiver vulnerability, the lack of institutional recognition of their role and the need to reform the existing social support framework. The paper also emphasizes the importance of a unified approach based on collaboration among social work, psychology and community networks or actors, as essential instruments for reducing social suffering and improving the quality of life of patients and their families.
