Summary/Abstract: Although writing had a special status in Western civilization, modern technology has democratised it, allowing anyone to communicate through text. Emoticons have quickly become integrated into digital communication, enriching messages and helping to express emotions, but also to maintain social relationships. Nowadays, it is difficult to imagine a conversation on any electronic communication channel (email, messaging applications, etc.) and device from which emoticons would be missing. However, emoticons are not just simple auxiliaries of a text; they can turn into a potentially distinct language, compared to traditional writing, an independent language which devours the word, suppresses the verbal element, and kills abstraction. In the context in which today, communication mediated by devices represents the main means by which we relate to our fellow human beings, are we not, as a civilization, embarking on a loop that closes in the time of ancient Egyptians, with their hieroglyphs? In conclusion, the impact of emoticons on communication is significant, but their future remains uncertain, especially in the context of the continuous evolution of communication technologies.
