Summary/Abstract: As the 20th century progressed, social networks began to supplant the central role of traditional media and journalists as authorities and sources of information. They democratized the process of creating news, reports, and investigations, making the creation of journalistic products accessible to any user with the desire and time, as well as the attraction of an audience. Thus, the phenomenon of “citizen journalism” emerged and developed. This report aims to formulate a definition of the concept of “citizen journalism” in the Bulgarian media context, to examine the function of the phenomenon in the work of professional journalists, as well as to supplement the academic narrative on the topic with the Eastern European landscape, which is not strongly researched. Data was collected through a questionnaire among Bulgarian journalists to understand the phenomenon, its functions in traditional media, and its development in the Eastern European media environment. It shows that citizen journalism is developing in Bulgaria.
