Summary/Abstract: The author analyzes the use of the observation method in journalistic investigations of psychiatric institutions. The specificity of the investigative search during the disclosure of the mentioned topic is indicated. The history and context of journalistic investigations concerning institutions for mentally disabled people are outlined. Emphasis is placed on the actualization of this problem in Ukraine in connection with the spread of combat mental injuries, post-traumatic syndromes, as a special phenomenon of wartime. The types of observation methods used during such investigations are identified and classified. Special attention is paid to covert included surveillance, use of the technique of changing professions, “masks”, etc., and cautions and risks – including ethical ones – that arise in this case.
