Summary/Abstract: The author presents the religious attitudes of intellectuals active in the environment of the University of Padua in the mid-16th century: humanists with non-denominational tendencies, reformist activists loyal to papal Rome, supporters of the Tridentine reforms, as well as the so-called Italian Evangelicals, radical theologians moving towards Unitarianism, and libertines. Against this backdrop, the article traces the formation of Jan Kochanowski’s religious beliefs during his studies in Padua (1552–1559) and his subsequent strategy of coexistence with both Catholic and Protestant figures in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The analysis focuses on his religious-themed works ('Psalter', 'Carmina') and the poet’s statements on religious conflicts and common religiosity. The article engages in a discussion with long-established generalizations in the scholarly literature regarding Jan Kochanowski’s religious beliefs.
