Summary/Abstract: This article explains the wider background of the forms of transnational political organisations on the political left that have passed a long way since the 19th century Socialist International and the first tries to gather various leftist political organisations in order to foster cooperation and communication at an international level. In recent years, we are seeing three divergent processes influencing primarily leftist parties’ associations. First, on the global level, the split within the Socialist International and the creation of the Progressive Alliance. Second, the functioning of the European Parliament and its impact on the work of parties in Europe and their cooperation in the European context. Finally, the crisis situation in Europe where a visible change of approach of the electorate towards the mainstream political parties is having a heavy toll on the functioning of a number of traditional parties and their positioning in the European and international scene.
