Summary/Abstract: Sustainable development has emerged as a significant issue in the late 20th century. This descriptive study compares the environmental pressures of countries and regions according to the Planetary Pressures-adjusted Human Development Index (PHDI). Thus, this paper aims to evaluate sustainable development through its environmental dimension. Data from this study were taken from Human Development Reports published by United Nations Development Programme. The findings indicate that the European Union (EU) is the region with the greatest environmental pressure. EU countries must implement more environmental policies in line with sustainable development.
