Summary/Abstract: This study quantitatively examines the academic community in Serbia during the 2000s, focusing on their professional careers, work conditions, job satisfaction, and especially their social engagement and responsibility towards society. It situates the social activism of academics within the broader transformational processes of Serbian society and explores how the academic elite contributes to social change and democratic principles. The research builds on international and regional studies to define and measure social engagement, emphasizing the evolving role and potential of universities and academics in shaping public life.
