Summary/Abstract: The analysis frames the relationship between Serbian universities and the academic community within two intertwined contexts: the broad social transformation of Serbian society and the more specific transformation of the university itself, influenced by both global changes and national reforms like the 2003 Bologna Process. Post-socialist Serbia has undergone a complex, long-term social transformation marked by crises of identity and social restructuring, which also significantly impacted the university’s social role, institutional structure, and perceptions within society. Despite ongoing societal changes, many academic members believe universities in Serbia still provide equal opportunities across social classes, while simultaneously recognizing that universities play a crucial, though differently interpreted, role in shaping social transformation and elite formation.
