Summary/Abstract: Modern societies are facing serious global environmental problems caused by the negative impact on the environment. In order for societies to cope with these challenges, it is necessary to change not only the way goods are produced and consumed, but also the actions that are taken towards the waste generated from them. Taking these actions will also determine the future vision of sustainable material recovery - whether the resulting waste will take on the properties of a secondary product with high consumption characteristics or will retain its form as household waste, which will have its negative impacts on the environment and human health. Aspects of the circular economy in the context of sewage systems are the recycling of valuable substances from wastewater. The sludge that is extracted in the treatment processes represents a 'waste' of mineral and organic substances that can and should find a circular use. Efforts to promote the use of sewage sludge as a by-product could prove decisive in the context of the sustainable development of various sectors of the economy. On the other hand, the extent and quality of the sewage networks and also of the WWTPs in operation in the country provide clarity as to what the options are for wastewater management in general, and this in turn should give a new direction to the development of their efficiency and hence a reduction in the environmental footprint. The subject of this paper is the sludge from WWTPs as a by-product of wastewater disposal and treatment activities in Bulgaria - their location, importance and distribution in the context of sewerage networks in Bulgaria. The development aims to examine the scope, importance and current status of the drainage systems and sludge flows generated by the wastewater disposal and treatment processes in Bulgaria as part of the centralized sewerage network in the country. In addition, the main objective is to identify the current constraints and opportunities facing the sector, in particular in management and current practices in the context of sustainable development. In order to achieve the above objectives, the following tasks are set in the development: To review and determine the level of coverage of wastewater disposal and treatment services in the country; To review the number of population using wastewater services; Review both the quality and quantity of wastewater generated and discharged; Review the levels of sludge produced, recovered and disposed of in the country.
