Summary/Abstract: Bulgaria has been part of the European Union for seventeen years. According to the latest statistical data, Bulgaria is the country with the lowest average life expectancy in the European Union and, accordingly, with the lowest working life expectancy, according to the European statistical service Eurostat. The demographic state of the territory reflects on all spheres, but it has the most significant impact on economic development, since the economy of a country is driven by the active working population. It is the significance of the interrelationship between demographic and economic development that determines the topicality of the problem and its multifaceted aspects. The North-West region is characterized by negative trends in demographic, economic and business indicators. In parallel with the negative demographic indicators, there is high unemployment, a high level of job offer by businesses and a high lack of interest on the part of the unemployed to join the working life.
