Summary/Abstract: Poverty and social exclusion are among the most serious issues of the economy and society in Bulgaria and EU. In 2023 more than a fifth of the population (21%) in the EU is at risk of poverty and social exclusion, in Bulgaria reaching 30%. In addition to income, poverty refers to also other deprivations and lack of opportunities, such as access to education and health care, access to assets and resources, limits employment opportunities and results in social isolation and exclusion. Poverty is multidimensional and integrated multidimensional economic models should be used to enable effective activation, participation in the labor market and social inclusion. Adopting appropriate economic and social models can activate and support inclusion of the poorest in the labor market and in society, reducing unemployment. The aim of the work is to present economic models to combat poverty applied in EU, and to give guidance for suitable approaches for Bulgaria.
