Summary/Abstract: Issues related to alternative pension insurance are very poorly covered in our specialized literature, and this report will address various options and the extent to which they are applicable to the existing pension insurance in Bulgaria. Main attention will be paid to the so-called "Reverse mortgages", examining their mechanism of action and their characteristics. The advantages of this type of alternative pension insurance, the risks of using a reverse mortgage and examples of countries that have successfully implemented this instrument will also be discussed.
