Summary/Abstract: Educational institutions must evolve and adapt to fulfill their core mission of preparing students for a complex and interconnected world with rapid technological, cultural, economic and demographic change. Innovation in education is generated by the multitude of changes produced in the economy and in the social sphere and focuses on directing innovative processes. Innovation process models can contribute to the development of innovative management in the theory and practice of higher education. The models of the innovation process refer to basic research, in which new scientific discoveries appear, to applied research in which scientific breakthroughs are transformed by design into the practical elaboration of new products, processes, innovative technical and scientific achievements. This article proposes an analysis of the main aspects of social innovation in education: dimensions, factors acting at the level of the environment, institution, department or program of study, places and contexts in which innovation manifests itself etc.
