Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the overlap of language, culture, language teaching, and higher education from a theoretical point of view and by presenting a practical example. It discusses the relationship of language and culture, inter- and multiculturalism, and the cultural dimension of language teaching. Then it presents a specific Hungarian higher educational example in which, at the Centre for Foreign Language Education of the University of Pannonia, Japanese language had its prominent place in the encounter of languages and cultures –predominantly between 2009 and 2011 and within the J-CAT Programme.
