Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses womenʼs writing, namely its content and transformations, in the context of Croatian prose from an interdisciplinary perspective and in relation to gender in culture from the late socialism to 1990s. The goal of the paper is to map out Croatian womenʼs writing in relation to such topics as cultural repression, displacement and feminism. It also discusses cultural stereotypes and prejudices towards “the imaginary of female authorship” concept. Womenʼs writing, especially novels by Irena Vrkljan, Slavenka Drakulić and Dubravka Ugrešić, addresses the change in perception of female authors as second-rate writers and forcuses on them as figures of radical otherness due to their active expression of femininity, sensibility and sexuality through self-reflection.
