Summary/Abstract: European reforms of rail transport are based on the concept of transport services market liberalisation. Due to the fact that rail transport is a very distinctive service and has undergone a very non-standard development in Europe (nationalisation and monopolisation), implementation of liberalisation is not easy and straightforward. Although European legal norms deal with the procedure and basic standards of liberalisation, the way they are carried out in member countries of European Union is not the same, which can be said about the intensity of the measures performed and the actual degree of national transportation markets liberalisation, too. Three models of liberalisation have been pressed since the 1990s: the Swedish, British and German models. Albeit European reforms have headed towards the Swedish or British type from the beginning, it is clear now that the German model will maintain a very strong position in continental Europe. Therefore, greater attention should be paid to detecting breaches of free competition rules in the industry, and to preventing misuse of dominant position held by national railway carriers on emerging transportation markets of Europe by the means of appropriate setting of regulations and supervision over market functioning.
