Summary/Abstract: The research was carried out with the goals of indicating the lines of poetic reception of modern Greek folk songs by Polish authors in the 19th century. The article presents Polish translations of these songs in the context of personages and education of their authors, their participation in the November Uprising – their work and life – and that fact that these works are mediated from the French translations. The author of the article argues that in the first wave of interest in Greek songs (1826–1830) the translations were related mainly to the Romantic fascination with folk character, and later, already in the 1830s, to the idea of the freedom struggle. Although some of the translated songs from this period were also related to Greek customs and myths, it was in the second half of the 19th century when new themes – love and death - were fully introduced. The analysed translations were made by Kazimierz Brodziński (1791–1835), Aleksander Chodźko (1804–1891), Józef Dunin-Borkowski (1809–1843), and Seweryna Duchińska (1816–1905), amongst others.
